From the Author
First, I would like to thank my readers who have remained steadfast and faithful to me. As you know I always try to bring something new to the table and this time around is no different.

In "The Real Deal" I explored the notion of what happens when a Black Sista from Harlem runs into a White Man from Malibu. In "A New Day" I explored the issues of class, single motherhood and allowing good love to come into your life. "Warm Hands" was about truly loving yourself before someone else will be able... read more

Book Description
Sandy finally had everything her heart desired...

Sandy Hutchinson has skin so dark and chocolatey brown that her friends call her "the black Diva." At the age of thirty-four, she and her three girlfriends have shared a tight bond since college, and have been through the ups and disappointing downs of dating. With high aspirations about careers and love, they sometimes fall a bit short of their dreams, but nevertheless are always there for one another to offer sympathy and support. Sandy wonders if love will forever elude her, until the day she meets Adrian Burton, a Trinidadian with caramel skin, naturally wavy hair, and eyes the color of butterscotch.

Then she had to decide whether or not to keep it.

Plagued with low self-esteem since childhood, Sandy is dubious that Adrian could be attracted to her. But Adrian, ernest in his intentions, opens his heart and wins her over. Together they share a whirlwind romance filled with blissful happiness, until the night of a fateful call from the hospital, when Sandy learns about Adrian's failing ex-wife. Now, Sandy must decide if her love is strong enough to help get them through what may be their darkest hour.

5 out of 5 stars I just finished reading it and HAVE TO SAY..., May 19, 2001
Reviewer: clbzone (see more about me) from Austin, TX USA
You KNOW a novel is good when you stay up till the wee hours of the morning reading it. You KNOW a novel is good when you'd rather ride then drive, so you can read. You KNOW a novel is good when you get choked up and have to put it down to compose yourself before you continue.

Butterscotch Blues was a marvelous read. Kudos to Margaret Johnson-Hodge for bring real life issues to the table and not sugar coating anything. The characters were vibrant and multi-faceted. I loved Sandy and Adrian. I loved Janice and Cliff. Loved Rachel (Margaret had that Trinidadian dialect DOWN!)

Not everyone in the book is a likable character but that's how real life is. I really enjoyed the parent's roles and the strength of the two fathers. The twists and turns, ups and downs and the ultimate sacrifices made were very touching. You will find yourself shaking your head in anger as well as rooting for these characters.

I won't give anything away, but I will say that I teared up so many times in reading this book. The story is a true testimant to unconditional love and its many forms: self-love, family, friends and romance. I also love how she bought self-image (light skin versus dark skin) into play. She also incorporates her favorite song into the story's theme, brilliantly.

I highly recommend this book & will read her other novels.

Peace. CLB. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition

5 out of 5 stars Will Capture Your Attention and Your Heart!, February 14, 2001

Top 500 Reviewer Reviewer: usc80 (see more about me) from Harrisburg, PA
Butterscotch Blues by Margaret Hodge is a multi-dimensional relational novel which details Sandi's(the main character/protagonist) life with family, friends and new beau Adrian. Butterscotch Blues was painstakingly emotional but oh so compelling, well crafted and a page turner from the onset so I was able to read this wonderfully told story in one sitting. So many thoughts ran through my head as I watched the relationship of Sandi and Adrian unfold and experienced heart-wrenching, soul stirring situations that made me wonder "could I express that type of unconditional love if I were in the same situation". I liked that Sandi's character had dimension and depth and as such we were able to see her beyond just her beau; we lived with her through sisterfriend and familial relationships. Girlfriends that we knew...and could call our friends...Brittany(the overweight sister who's the last one to usually have a man), Martha(the sisterfriend who only dates men with big pockets/wallets)and Janice(the friend who always has to have a man-any man-even a piece of man is okay). We're up close and personal with Sandi and Adrian's families as we explore issues of betrayal and skin color divisiveness in the AA community. Butterscotch Blues is a complex story filled with crafty dialogue, vivid imagery, realistic situations, well-developed characters and plot twists and turns; it's a story of hope, love and living each day to the fullest. Ms. Hodge is truly a wonderful storyteller as Butterscotch Blues is a story that you live and experience long after you've read the book. Butterscotch Blues was one of My Top 10 books for 2000 and its a book that I recommend for your reading pleasure. Pick Up Your Copy Today!

5 out of 5 stars Talk About Awareness, July 18, 2003
Reviewer: topazzz6 (see more about me) from Albany,NY
This book opens your eyes again about HIV/AIDS. This disease is not gone but is forgotten by many. This book made the characters so real to me that I actually wept. Very moving story. My best friend is from Jamaica and although Adrian is Guyanese some of his family lifestyle was almost identical to her family. These characters will stay with me for awhile. I also think that they should let high school read this for extra credit. The story is so real that maybe when they are put in a precarious situation they will think about Adrian,Genifer and Sandy. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition

5 out of 5 stars Your hearts desires/and then you can't......................, May 16, 2003
Reviewer: nardsbaby (see more about me) from Westside Chi-town, IL United States
This is amongst the greatest books I've read. It deals with very real issues, AIDS, the color syndrome amongst blacks, love, marriage, friendship, and loneliness. 4 friends who literally transform before you.
Sandy after being involved in a so I won't be alone relationship finally gets the picture and meets Adrian who opens her eyes to the beauty of being a beautiful dark skin black and opens her mind to the reality of safe sex and her heart to an abiding love.
Janice the friend we all have who can't seem to get that she keeps settling and giving way too much of herself in these one sided relationships finally gets some guts, a brain and a real man.
Martha the money-making sistah whose standards are set entirely too high can't get a man so she is turning into a bitter depressing drunk who sees that she has to let it be and finally gets a man who is intelligent enough to do whatever he chooses but he does things to impress self.
Britney who has weight and low self esteem issues. Finds a sponsor who shows her love isn't always a size 6 and she begins to take more pride in herself.

It's so much more it's about the power of an abiding love! As you read you're like okay this is it do it and then it's too late they break up she can't cope and when finally all the cards are on the table and ... I am still crying! This is the first book I've read by Margaret Johnson-Hodge I will be checking out her other ones real soon. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition

3 out of 5 stars Had its momemts but could have been better., February 26, 2003
Reviewer: shawnjames_20003 (see more about me) from Bronx, NY
Butterscotch blues starts off slow and is very difficult to get into. In the begining we meet Sandy, Britney, and Janice. Sandy meets her main love interest Adrian a wet indian with skin the color of butterscotch and they seem to fall in love instantly. As they grow closer together, Sandy learns about Adrian's issues: A dying wife with HIV ands the chance that her dream lover may be infected. While Ms. Johnson-Hodge handles the chapters dealing with AIDS incredibly the rest of the book falls flat. The subplots are tossed together and we barely get to know any of the supporting characters very well. The book gets disjointed trying to navigate the love lives of Britney and Janice, Their lovers, and the issues regarding skin color, race, and the cultural conflict between African-Americans and West Indians. I think this would have been a geat book if Ms. Johnson-Hodge had only dealt with Sandy and Adrian Dealing with AIDS and HIV. IMHO borrow it from a friend or buy it used. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition

This book was excellent. I laughed, I cried and cried again at the end. It can't get any better than this. This is one of my favorite books. Keep writing them like you do.
