Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Traveling the same ground as Terry McMillan, this latest from Johnson-Hodge (The Real Deal) follows the travails and transformation of a strong but self-sabotaging African-American woman. At 35, Mya Williams is barely over her romance with a seductive loser named Vincent when she meets Jeff, a successful young architect. They've scheduled the wedding when Mya finds herself unable to resist one final tryst with her sexy ex. In the aftermath, a shell-shocked Mya--now dumped by both Vincent and Jeff--is forced to examine her soul, her sexual cravings and her self-destructive neediness. Pondering the collapse of her life and the fragmentation--at once funny and painful--of her family, Mya attains a peaceful self-reliance and finds her true soul mate along the way. Mya's metamorphosis from madcap confusion to a nearly saintly level of self-actualization is too seamless to ring true, and--as is so often the case--her tale is far more fun before her conversion than after it. Still, Johnson-Hodge offers a sassy and often endearing story. (Mar.)

Book Description
Mya is feelings free and content after months of heartbreaking sadness in the aftermath of breaking up with her commitment-phobic boyfriend, vincent. She's taken up running, looks good, and has no intention of starting another relationship. Then she meets Jeff. Handsome, decent, and kind, he's a keeper - the kind of man she's always wanted... the man she is about to marry. Until she stuns herself and everyone else by betraying Jeff...with Vincent. Through a haze of pain, despair and desperation, Mya awakens to life's truest lessons: self-love is the most important love of all, and only by loving yourself can others truly love you...

5 out of 5 stars Just what women need to read.., December 23, 2000
Reviewer: Anfra (see more about me) from Memphis, TN
Warm Hands is a story of a woman's journey to self-love. Like so many women, Mya unknowningly dates the same kind of men that are just like her father. She finds herself searching for love in all the wrong places and has accepted the only love is the "wrong love" that she had seen her mother live with.

When she finally meets Jeff, someone who's loving, honest and faithful, she panicks, "can't be real love", no lies, no games, no where have you been all night" like the her past relationships and the one her mother had been in for years with her father.

What happens next is all too familar in relationships. This book is a must read for women. Margaret Johnson-Hodge does an excellent job at writng a story that so eloquently describes the evolution of love -- self love. Go out and buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Deep, Deep, Deep...., May 13, 2000
Reviewer: Tanya (see more about me) from Houston, Texas United States
Warm Hands offers a realistic story about a thirty something sista who is forced to take a serious look at herself and make some changes. We must love overself before we can expect anyone else to. When one doesn't love self it shows.

Decisions, Decisions....Why did Mya cheat on Jeff? What a dysfunctional family. Old Scotty was a bit much. I was glad when Claudia got fed up and packed her bags. She should have done that a long long time ago.

I agree with one of the other readers. My favorite quote from the book: " I'm not asking you out..I'm asking you in.." That is too deep.

This book is one that will stay with me for awhile. I think each reader can relate to some of the issues at one point or another in their life. This is an excellent novel and the message is clear...Love Yourself First. Everything else will fall into place.

Margaret, Thanks for a great read. I can't wait to read "Butterscoth Blues". I wish you much success. Be Blessed!

2 out of 5 stars Typical, April 24, 2003
Reviewer: typerk (see more about me) from Garland, TX United States
Woman ruins the best thing to ever enter her life by cheating on him, but no it's not her fault. It's her mother's, father's, brother's, and society's fault. Of course she turns into a dread wearing, incense burning, african trinkett buying, self marrying mess who finds the "perfect black man" who of course is also a dread wearing, incense burning, african trinket buying self marrying mess.

4 out of 5 stars Letting Go, December 11, 2002
Reviewer: preciousjewel2001 (see more about me) from Washington, DC
I enjoyed the book. MJH writes well, and I love the way she makes the transition with her words. It is incredible! The story was very therapeutic for me, and I am sure for many women. Sometimes before we "let go" we have to discover what we are holding onto, and it takes some soul searching. Mya was only able to let go when she dug deep into her family. We first learn "love" through our parents and family. Mya's was dysfunctional and so she chose her relationships the same way. When Jeff came along, he was a nice guy and I loved him! But when you are use to not getting that type of love, it's like a foreigh substance. You really don't know "how" to accept it, or as Mya said..."Love you back enough." She wasn't able to give Jeff something she didn't have within herself. I agree that she got a bit carried away with marrying herself, that was whack! I think I would have given it five stars if MJH brought a better closure to Mya and Jeff's relationship. I expected for them to get back together, Jeff was just too nice. She should have at least made them have a more sentimental conversation. Mya seemed cold to me, instead of sure of herself. Once they made amends of the betrayal, then MJH should have maybe have Jeff engaged to "Liz" no longer "just friends" as he put it. Then Mya moved on to Alex, who we really didn't get a chance to know as well as we did Jeff. And what happened with Gail's relationship?

MJH-please do a sequel or something...bring some better closure!

4 out of 5 stars Letting Go, December 11, 2002
Reviewer: A reader from Washington, DC
This was a very good book! I found it very therapeutic! The book really addresses the importance of what real love is. Most people identify with the love they first learned from their families, particularly their parents. As with the character Mya. Through her journey of self-discovery she learned what real love was about-having it for yourself first. Until she found the love for herself, and healed from her past, family troubles, and learned to forgive, and accept...only than could she let go in every way. In a way I was surprised by a few things (I won't tell), but we as women do have to get away from the fairytales the "happily everafters" so to speak. In the end though, she got the love she truly wanted because she "let go" and was able to move on.

I would love to see this into a movie. It was good read, and the only reason I didn't give it five stars is because there were a lot of typos, and it confused me at times. Margaret writes well, but needs a new editor.

5 out of 5 stars Warm, loving hands lead you toward the finish line!, July 21, 2002
Reviewer: DasiaMom (see more about me) from Circle of Friends II, Atlanta
This fast-paced pageturner is the story of Mya Williams who discovers love while running along the track. The love she discovers is not running alongside her but within her. As the seemingly simple story unfolds and runs its course, the author detours the reader along an unsuspecting path of enlightenment - making us face the real issues addressed in the novel. Margaret Johnson-Hodge is not only creative in telling her story, but she is ingenious in HOW she interjects the twists of her novels.

In "Warm Hands", we run around the track with Mya and Jeff as they run into one another and inevitably fall in love. The story continues on a steady pace, and so does the relationship that eventually leads to wedding plans. Things are going smoothly, perhaps too smooth, so the author throws in a twist named Vincent. He comes and goes again, literally:-) leaving Mya confused and running after her past instead of toward her future.

When the wedding is off, Mya's life is off (balance) too. She wallows in the mud of her failed relationship, and the mud becomes like quicksand until a new friend, Chloe, reaches out and throws her a lifeline (chapter 13). Though the lifeline is not quite enough to save her life, Mya continues the struggle to self discovery and self love. I'm not sure if it is intentional or coincidental that the author makes the reader struggle with Mya. The writing suddenly becomes sloppy (typos and grammatical errors) and sluggish - making it almost difficult to continue.

Don't give up the race. By chapter 18, another twist brings on enLIGHTenment. As the light shines through, your heart will rejoice! Be prepared for the refreshing and rewarding emotions that will flood your heart and eyes as the author triumphantly takes you to the glorious finish line. Mya's victory is our win too!
